One of the most striking elements of McKinley Village occupies less than half an acre of the 49-acre project. But its design and mission — connecting McKinley Village to East Sacramento and the urban core — make the McKinley underpass and bridge a critical element of the infill project.

Although developers had eyed the McKinley Village site since 1992, access to the property was a problem, given that it is enclosed by Capital City Freeway and the Union Pacific railroad embankment. Building an underpass provided access for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians while the bridge above it accommodates about 30 freight and passenger trains a day.
